Brisbane International 2013 Day 1

The Main headline in the opening day of the Brisbane International is Serena Williams's dominant first round display against Varvara Lepchenko beating her 6-2 6-1 to easily advance to the next round and play the winner of  Alize Cornet or wild card Australian Bojana Bobustic ( who came from the Qualifying rounds with a surprising and well fought 3 set 6-4 4-6 6-4 win against Pliskova who is ranked over 100 places higher then Bobustic )

Kvitova also made a great but at times tricky start to her season with a sixth straight win in the Brisbane International beating the world #34 Carla Suarez Navarro 6-3 6-4, The former champion Kvitova was broken 3 times by Suarez Navarro but still looked in control of the match all the way through despite letting a big lead slip in the second set she managed to see of the match in straight sets and the 6th Seed Kvitova will now face Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the second round after the Russian beat Czech Lucie Hradecká 6-3 3-6 6-3, Kvitova and Pavlyuchenova have met 6 times before with the head to head stats going in Kvitova's favor 4-2

Australian Jarmila Gajdošová managed an emotional big first round win against #16 in the world Roberta Vinci the 25 year old who is now #183 in the world dropped the first set to the Italian 6-4 before mounting  an impressive comeback to win the next two sets 6-1 6-3 and troubing Vinci with her groundstokes, Jarmila who has had the worst possible year in 2012 after losing her Mother to throat cancer in September and slipping down the rankings after she went as high as #25 in 2011 but it looks like she might be on the up after this impressive victory and has earned a second round meeting with Maria Sharapova next

Urszula Radwańska also progressed to the second round with a good spirited comeback against Tamira Paszek, Urszula started poorly losing the 1st set 6-2 but then couldn't have asked for a better 2nd set performance after she Bagel-ed Paszek and then eased the decider 6-2 and will now face the winner of Wozniacki and Pervak in the 2nd Round the only over Women's single match was a win for Daniela Hantuchová over Lourdes Domínguez Lino 7-5 6-2 and 19 year old Puerto Rican Monica Puig managed to Qualify for Round 1 with an impressive comeback from a set down against Bethanie Mattek-Sands
